UNDP and its role in the Facility
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the global development agency of the United Nations. With a network of 144 country offices, UNDP has a history of delivering practical solutions through private-sector partnerships and is one of the world's largest providers of technical assistance in the area of climate change.
UNDP's role in the Facility is to provide technical assistance to project proponents by:
  Performing due diligence, assessing the viability of the emission reduction project and laying the foundation for project development;
Offering technical assistance for Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation project approval; and
Establishing a monitoring system for the project's emission reductions.
UNDP brings the following qualities to the Facility:
Project development and environmental expertise: With a US$5 billion portfolio of 7,000 energy and environmental projects, UNDP has proven expertise in developing environmental projects in developing countries.
A well-respected international agency with local presence: UNDP is a not-for-profit development agency with an extensive worldwide, on-the-ground presence in developing countries, giving it a broad understanding of local contexts and the ability to effectively manage local risks. UNDP has built links and considerable trust with governments, civil society, and the private sector.
Experienced promoter of sustainable development: UNDP has an in-depth understanding of individual country's sustainable development goals and development challenges. UNDP develops emission reduction projects that yield additional sustainable development and poverty reduction benefits, thereby maximizing benefits for the local community and environment while contributing to the MDGs.

The UN Foundation provided UNDP with a grant for developing the Facility.
