The United Nations Environmental Programme is the voice for the environment within the UN system.

UNEP has a key role to play in a broad range of activities related to understanding, mitigating and adapting to climate change. The context for UNEP activities is provided by the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol.

International frameworks

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement that sets legally binding targets and timetables for cutting countries' greenhouse gas emissions. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Web site provides information on the Protocol's background, mechanisms, reporting and compliance.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which entered into force in 1994, established the overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge posed by climate change.

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) provides a means for developed countries to implement emissions reduction projects in developing countries in exchange for Certified Emission Reductions.

Joint Implementation (JI) provides for developed countries to implement projects that reduce emissions or remove carbon from the atmosphere in other developed countries in return for Emission Reduction Units.

Markets and trading

International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) is a non-profit organization created to establish a functional international framework for trading greenhouse gas emissions. The Web site provides information on climate change and emissions trading.

European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), a multi-nation emissions trading scheme, commenced in 2005.The European Commission maintains this Web site, which provides information on the Commission's work, including its environmental policy and the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

European Climate Exchange (ECX) is the largest pan-European platform for carbon emissions trading.

Conferences

Carbon Expo is the largest annual carbon-related trade fair. Organized by the International Emissions Trading Association, The World Bank and others, it is held concurrently with a conference at which the world's leading experts provide information on developments in emissions trading.
